Meditation is a controlled mental practice. Knowledge of Meditation focuses the mind on one point and purifies mental thinking. Meditation is a special process of maintaining mental patience. In the process of meditation, the person meditating tries to stabilize the mind on his breath, mantra, any object, sound, or thought. According to the Vedas, meditation is a divine gift to mankind to make the mind calm and active. Meditation has a special place in Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, and Taoist traditions.

Importance of Meditation

Meditation is a very important process in human life. I would like to present the importance of meditation in a point-by-point manner.

1• Meditation maintains mental peace. Peace cannot be bought with money and cannot be given by anyone; it is created only in the mind. Without peace, happiness in life cannot be imagined. It frees us from stress, jealousy, cruelty, anger and anxiety. Peace can be called the basis of a happy life.

2• Meditation as the basis of a healthy lifestyle. Meditation

improves mental health, improves sleep, helps reduce high blood pressure, when mental peace and cleanliness are maintained, it also has a positive effect on the digestive system, which reduces the possibility of other diseases entering the body.

3. Increases memory and concentration. Without concentration, no work can be done correctly and completely. Meditation trains the brain and makes it active. An active brain increases concentration and study capacity. In ancient times, sages used to purify and activate the brain through meditation and studied and were successful. In the modern era, the use of meditation is increasing. Vedic philosophy and meditation are being used all over the world.

4• Spiritual development through meditation

Meditation helps in self-reflection, self-knowledge and self-control. It is necessary to behave with self-control in every situation of life. Therefore, meditation should be done in the right manner and according to the rules and guidelines.

5• Meditation makes you free from negative emotions.

Regular and proper meditation helps in controlling emotions like anger, jealousy, sadness, fear. Anger and fear cause obstacles in every work in life. Therefore, meditation is necessary to get rid of obstacles and make the work successful.

Types of Meditation Practices

Whatever we do, rules and methods are necessary. There are also various types of meditation practices and methods, some of which I would like to present here.

1. Focused Attention Meditation

Meditation is meditation done by focusing the mind on a specific object, mantra, or sound. It can be done while sitting in Sukhasana, Vajrasana, or Padmasana. This type of meditation is especially used in Buddhist meditation (e.g., Vipassana).

When thoughts arise, the attention returns to the focused point. This meditation process is easy and beneficial.

2. Vipassana Meditation

Vipassana meditation is a method based specifically on Buddhism. During this meditation, practitioners observe their body, thoughts, emotions, and surrounding environment without reacting. 10-day Vipassana camps are conducted in many places in Nepal and India. Anyone who is interested can participate.

3. Kundalini Meditation

Among the types of meditation, the characteristics of Kundalini meditation are slightly different. This meditation is a special meditation associated with yoga. While meditating, an attempt is made to awaken the prana (energy). Breathing, mantras, and postures are used.

4. Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness meditation is to awaken awareness in every aspect of human life and to integrate it into appropriate skills. This meditation is a practice of bringing full awareness to the present moment, as it intensifies the practice of accepting thoughts, feelings, and sensations. It improves family and social relationships. This meditation is considered very useful in improving mental health.

5. Devotional Meditation / Bhakti Yoga

This meditation is specifically a meditation to develop love and devotion towards God, parents, teachers or deities. In the Vedic tradition, it is customary to worship and serve the parents who gave birth and the teacher who gave knowledge as God. It is also seen in the Buddhist tradition.

6. Zazen

This is a meditation technique that is especially practiced according to the Japanese Buddhist tradition. It is usually done silently and is aware of the movement of the breath or thoughts. It is also somewhat similar to mindfulness meditation and bhakti yoga. In Japan and Nepal, the custom of greeting and welcoming parents, teachers, elders and respected people is somewhat similar. This meditation technique makes you aware.

7.  Transcendental Meditation (TM)

This is specifically done by chanting mantras.

This meditation has become popular in Western countries. It is easy, simple and scientifically proven. It also tries to keep the mind calm.

Meditation Around the World

Eastern World

Nepal, India, China, Japan, Tibet and other countries have an ancient tradition of meditation. The meditation method, which was created and expanded from Vedic scriptures and culture, has become a part of the lifestyle in the Buddhist, Hindu, Taoist, and Zen traditions in the present era. Meditation is especially practiced for attaining salvation, self-knowledge, and spiritual advancement.

Meditation in the Western World

Yoga and meditation, which originated and developed from Vedic scriptures and traditions, have become popular in the Western world in recent decades. Yoga and meditation are especially used there as a means to improve mental health, reduce stress, and increase performance.

Therapies such as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), CBT with meditation, etc. include meditation.

Meditation and Science

According to the Vedic scriptures and methods, meditation was created with the aim of promoting spiritual development and mental health. It is an ancient science and is also fully compatible with today’s modern science. Meditation Reduces stress, helps control blood pressure, improves sleep, increases the ability to concentrate, and is beneficial in mental illnesses (such as depression, anxiety).

Therefore, mental hospitals have also started using meditation methods to treat mental patients. Thus, the relationship between modern science and meditation is strong.

In the present era, many people can be seen becoming mentally ill due to various stress, anxiety, jealousy and failure. The use of yoga and meditation has started to treat these patients all over the world. It is better from a scientific point of view that everyone should adopt this method.

Conclusion about meditation

Although meditation has been created and developed from Vedic Sanatan Dharma and Sanskar, it is completely scientific. In the present era, it is not limited to any one religion, culture or belief. It is a common method for the mental, emotional and spiritual progress of all mankind. Both its scientific and spiritual effects have been accepted all over the world. Therefore, I would like to tell everyone to follow the rules of meditation regularly and get benefits.
