“Do Bhastrika regularly; keep the respiratory and digestive systems active and strong”
Introduction

In yoga, pranayama is considered an important tool for balancing and organizing the body, mind, and life force. ‘Prana’ means life force and ‘ayam’ means its expansion, control, or management. Among the various pranayamas, Bhastrika Pranayama is a very effective and energizing practice. The word ‘bhastrika’ means like a blacksmith’s furnace that blows hot air. Just as a furnace helps to melt metal by intensifying the fire, similarly Bhastrika Pranayama helps to activate the speed of breathing and create a feeling of freshness and energy in the body.
In Bhastrika, both puraka (inhalation) and lachaka (exhalation) are actively performed. When practiced regularly and correctly, the respiratory system is exercised, and the body and mind can feel refreshed. In yoga practice, it is also used as an energizing pranayama to prepare the body for other practices and meditation.
Today’s busy lifestyle, prolonged sitting, physical inactivity, stress, and irregular eating habits can cause people to experience problems with relaxation and digestion. Therefore, regular yoga, pranayama, a balanced diet, and a disciplined lifestyle are important foundations for a healthy life.
How to do Bhastrika Pranayama
Bhastrika Pranayama should be performed on an empty stomach whenever possible, in a quiet, clean, and well-ventilated place. Morning is the best time to practice it.
1. First, sit comfortably in Padmasana, Siddhasana, Sukhasana, or Vajrasana in a quiet place. Keep your spine, neck, and head straight.
2. Close your eyes lightly and relax your body. Focus your mind on the practice by taking a few normal breaths.
3. Now, inhale actively through your nose and exhale actively through your nose. When you inhale, you will feel your stomach and chest expand naturally, and when you exhale, you will feel it contract.
4. Keep the breathing pace according to your ability and practice. Initially, you can complete one step by doing it 10-15 times. Then, take some time to breathe normally and relax.
5. After getting used to the practice, you can gradually increase the duration and frequency under the guidance of a teacher or yoga instructor.
6. While performing Bhastrika, do not shake your body unnecessarily, distort your face, or use excessive force. The correct method is more important than the speed of breathing.
7. At the end of the practice, it is better to sit quietly for some time while breathing normally. Then, you can meditate or do other yoga exercises as needed.
Benefits of Bhastrika Pranayama
Practicing Bhastrika Pranayama correctly and regularly can provide various physical and mental benefits.

a) For the respiratory system
It helps in practicing the process of inhaling and exhaling through the lungs as it actively moves the respiratory muscles. Regular practice can help improve awareness and ability of breathing.
b) Refreshment in the body
Since Bhastrika is an energetic practice, the body can feel refreshed and active after practice. It can be helpful in eliminating laziness and starting the day with enthusiasm.
c) For the digestive system
Since Bhastrika involves active activity of the stomach and diaphragm, it can help in keeping the digestive process active. Adopting a balanced diet and proper lifestyle along with regular yoga practice can be beneficial for digestive health.
d) To focus the mind
Focusing on the pace of breathing helps in keeping the mind in the present moment. It can help develop concentration, mental alertness, and self-discipline.
e) Helps in stress management
Regular and correct breathing exercises can help in body-mind coordination. Therefore, Bhastrika can be used for stress management within the overall practice of yoga and meditation.
f) Increase interest in yoga practice
As the practice of Bhastrika activates the body, it can increase enthusiasm for other asanas, pranayama, and meditation practices.
But one thing should always be remembered—Bhastrika is not a definitive cure for any disease. Its benefits may vary depending on the individual, the correct method of practice, and health condition.
4. Precautions to be taken while doing Bhastrika
Since Bhastrika is a powerful breathing exercise, it should be done according to the correct method and your physical ability.
* Do not breathe too fast or too hard at first.
* If you feel dizzy, have chest pain, feel uncomfortable, or have difficulty breathing abnormally, stop the practice immediately.
* People with serious heart or lung problems, uncontrolled high blood pressure, certain eye problems, or other health conditions should practice only after consulting a doctor and a qualified yoga instructor.
* Special precautions are required during pregnancy or if you have recently had surgery.
* Do not do Bhastrika immediately after eating.
* Do not practice forcibly when you are extremely tired, have a fever, or are unwell.
* Do not practice Kumbhak, i.e., holding your breath for longer than you can handle.
* It is better for children and new practitioners to start practicing under the supervision of an experienced yoga instructor.
The basic mantra of yoga is—“As much as you can, but in the right way.” Practicing more than your capacity by looking at others is not yoga.
5. Do Bhastrika regularly
A healthy life does not depend only on medicine and treatment. Regular exercise, yoga, pranayama, sattvik and balanced diet, adequate sleep, positive thinking, and a disciplined routine are the foundations of a healthy life.
Make it a habit to set aside some time in the morning for your body and breath. Some time can be spent on asana, some time on pranayama, and some time on meditation. Bhastrika can also be made a part of daily yoga practice according to your health and ability.
Breath is a constant companion of our life. We are traveling with breath from birth to death. Therefore, being aware of breathing also means being aware of our life. Bhastrika provides an opportunity to actively practice the act of breathing.
Conclusion
Bhastrika Pranayama is an energetic and effective breathing practice of yoga. When practiced with the right method, proper dosage, and regularity, it can help keep the respiratory system active, bring refreshment to the body, aid the digestive process, and make the mind focused and alert. To get its real benefits, not only pranayama is required, but also a balanced diet, regular physical activity, adequate rest, and a positive lifestyle.
